The game is based on the web series Angry Video Game Nerd by James Rolfe, a series dedicated to humorous reviews of low-quality retro games. Made in a retro style, AVGN Adventures parodies the games Rolfe reviewed and contains numerous references to both episodes of the show and the games themselves.
